One thing I’ve learnt over the years as a family doctor (amongst many other things, of course) is that from time to time all is not what it might seem.

Take our current disease epidemics – obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, etc etc etc.

We all know why we get these diseases. It’s been hardwired into us over the last 50 or so years. They tell us: it’s because we are pigging out too much. Or we’re sitting around too much. Or we’re not pumping the iron at the gym enough.

Then they say: don’t worry, do this, but don’t do that – and all will be fine. But if it all goes wrong you’ve nobody to blame but yourself.

However, what if, like me, you stumble upon something which makes you delve deep into the knowledge. Something which then turns the world upside down and inside out. Something which reveals what is both truly surprising and, on reflection, so blindingly obvious.

But heh, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Before we get to that blindingly obvious, I want to tell you a little story about how I’ve got to my present position and why. So buckle up everyone – this is going to be a bumpy ride and I don’t want to lose you along the way. (SPOILER ALERT: the final destination won’t be what you’re expecting.)
